What the Science (and EFSA) Actually Says

Why the honest, EU-authorised story about magnesium is less dramatic than the marketing — and still worth telling.

There's a particular kind of tired that shows up in Ireland every August. The long evenings are still here, but the routines that usually carry people through the year — regular meals, regular sleep, regular everything — have quietly slipped. School terms are about to restart, work schedules are resetting, and a lot of people find themselves reaching for a fourth coffee by 3pm and wondering why.

It's a fair question to ask whether nutrition has a role to play here. The honest answer is: for one nutrient in particular, yes — and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has said so in writing. For almost everything else people assume about “boosting energy,” the honest answer is: the evidence doesn't support a specific claim, so we won't make one. This piece sticks to the first kind.

Where magnesium actually fits in the body

Magnesium is involved in several hundred enzymatic processes in the body, from how cells generate usable energy to how nerves and muscles communicate with each other. It's not a stimulant and it's not a sedative — it's a mineral the body needs in the background, consistently, for ordinary systems to run the way they're supposed to.

That distinction matters, because it explains why the authorised claims for magnesium are written the way they are. They're not about a short-term lift or a switch being flipped. They're about normal function being maintained — which is a less dramatic story, but it's the one backed by the scientific assessment EFSA actually carried out.

What we can say — in EFSA's own framework

Under Regulation (EU) No 432/2012, a defined list of health claims for magnesium has been scientifically assessed and authorised for use on foods that qualify as a source of magnesium. These are the claims HealthReach Nutrition uses, and the only ones we use:

This is the claim most relevant to the August slump described above. It's specific: magnesium contributes to reducing tiredness and fatigue. It does not claim to increase energy, sharpen focus, or improve sleep — those are different claims, evaluated separately, and not currently authorised for magnesium.

Normal muscle and nervous system function

Magnesium plays a role in how muscles contract and how nerve signals are transmitted. For anyone active through the summer — training, hillwalking, back on the pitch after a break — this is the relevant, defensible territory: normal function, not enhanced performance.

Normal psychological function and energy metabolism

Two further authorised claims cover normal psychological function and the normal, ordinary metabolic processes that yield energy from food. Again: normal, not boosted. The wording is deliberate and it's the wording we stick to.

The wording above is deliberate. Small changes in language turn an authorised claim into an unauthorised one — so here's the difference in practice.

There is currently no EU-authorised health claim linking magnesium to sleep. It's a common assumption — magnesium supplements are heavily marketed on sleep in the UK and US — but the claim hasn't cleared the EFSA assessment process in the EU, so HealthReach Nutrition doesn't use it, in blog content, on packaging, or in social captions.

Getting enough from food, and where a supplement fits

Magnesium is naturally present in leafy green vegetables, nuts, seeds, wholegrains, and legumes. A varied diet built around those foods is the first and best route to adequate intake.
